According to the Outdoor Foundation, Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is the fastest growing sport in North America. Whether you are just getting started or have been a SUPper since before it was cool, having the best gear can transform your experience. Here we’ve gathered the top of the line basics you’ll want this summer:
- Sunglasses. The water reflects up to 100% of the sun’s rays, according to The Vision Council. What does that mean? UV protection is even more important when you are in the water than it is for everyday use. Just as you’d wear sunscreen to protect your skin, sunglasses protect your eyes. In a product review, the experts at SUP Magazine announced that our very own Stingray sunglasses “fit the paddlers niche to a T.” With a blending of an affordable price plus comfort, durability, polarization, and 100% UVA/UVB protection, Stingray sunglasses are the ultimate solution.
- The Board. On the “lower” end of SUP boards, without cheaping out, is The California Board Company‘s high quality product. This board was listed in SUP Board Guide‘s top 5 paddle boards last month. The 10’ 6″ board has a 100% waterproof core, made from high density Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam, and includes a surf leash.
- Paddles. You’ve got the board, now you need the paddle. The Bic Aluminum Adjustable Paddle was named one of the best paddles by the Windward Board Shop. Yep, Bic makes more than just easily lost pens. The major feature of the paddle is the foam padding that allows the durable frame to float–which is a lifesaver when you’re just starting out.
